History of APTA Formal creation of the new Ajax Pickering Transit Authority was completed, and the first official day of service was September 4, 2001. The Ajax Pickering Transit Authority was formalized in June 2000 with a memorandum of agreement, and proceeded under the direction of a joint Interim Board of Directors formed in January 2001. Our new Board of Directors has recently been appointed. Merger of the two transit systems creates one of the largest transit systems in the Greater Toronto Area, with ridership of over 2 million per year. A comprehensive analysis of routes in Ajax and Pickering is underway; riders will begin to see route changes to improve transportation across the two municipalities as time goes on. Under the final merger agreement between the two municipalities, the transit service is managed by a Board of Directors. The Town of Ajax will provide human resources and payroll services to APTA, while the City of Pickering will provide financial, accounting, auditing, budgeting, internal control and corporate legal services. Operating costs will be based on each municipality's tax assessment base. The formal transfer of assets, insurance, financial services and a final inventory evaluation will be finalized once Provincial legislation is passed.
