Folk Arts Council Of St. Catharines

edit this listing
In 1968, representatives from Niagara's multicultural communities came together: to provide an opportunity for cultural expression, encourage the retention of cultural heritage, share cultural activities with the community and promote understanding and acceptance among the various cultures that make up the Canadian mosaic. Thus was born the Niagara Folk Arts Festival, among the first of its kind, and which remains one of the longest running multicultural festivals in Canada today. During its heyday its success was so phenomenal that St. Catharines was known as the Folk Arts Capital of Canada. The Folk Arts Counci is a multicultural centre offering programs to immigrants and refugees: immigrant settlement counselling, employment programs, friendship and mentoring programs, english as a second language, immigrant women and youth programs. Located in the historic Robertson School the council rents banquet facilities in the historically preserved Robertson Hall.
