Jack (John Moor) Brewis
Tweet
Jack Brewis emigrated from England in 1923 and was captivated by the gold rush in Northern Ontario. He began learning the trade by working as a miner. By the end of W.W.II, despite being under financed and with the crudest of equiptment, he conducted exploratory driling in the Red Lake area. Jack struck gold and the Red Lake Mine became one of the richest and most profitable mines in the world; part of Goldcorp, the world's largest gold mining company. With his partner, Jack Brewis was responsible for mobilizing millions of dollars for resource exploration and development including the Campbell, and Dickenson Red Lake Mines. Jack Brewis was truly a great Canadian entrepreneur; his projects spawning some of the leading Gold operations in the world today. He lived in Shanty Bay until his untimely death and is buried at the St. Thomas Church Cemetry. The park, originally the Shanty Bay Station, was aquired by the Township of Oro-Medonte with the generous support of his daughters, in loving memory of their father.
