Ontario's First Quarry

edit this listing
Although Port McNicoll was not founded until 1912 as the Eastern terminus of the C.P.R. Upper Lakes Steamships, its limestone was quarried in 1639 for Ste. Marie 1, western terminus of the 800 mile fur trade route from Quebec. Transported by water three miles along the shores of Georgian Bay and up the Wye River, the limestone was used in bastion walls, fireplaces, and the alter base by French Master Mason Pierre Tourmente.
