Cup Match Classic

edit this listing
Started in 1901, the annual two-day Cup Match holiday festivities are the highlight of the Bermuda summer season. A public holiday unique to the island of Bermuda, Cup Match is a time in which the community enjoys a celebration of camping, boating, swimming and most importantly, cricket. Before the start of the Cup Match holiday, rival fans can be seen flying their team’s colours - red and navy for Somerset - the west end, pale blue and dark blue for St. George’s - the east end. The Bermuda Cup Match features a colourful blend of cricket, music, local food, fashion and a game of Crown & Anchor. The forerunner to Cup Match was introduced after the abolition of slavery in Bermuda on August 1, 1834. In celebration of Emancipation, players from Somerset and St. George’s met in friendly rivalry for a cricket match played between lodges from the east and west ends of the island. In 1901, during a match between two major Friendly Societies, an agreement was made to play for an annual trophy and the annual Bermuda Cup Match holiday was inaugurated.
