The first library in Fergus was founded in 1835 by Adam Fergusson,his partner James Webster,Alexander D. Fordyce, Mr. A. D. Ferrier, Hugh Black, James McQueen, and George Wilson. Alexander D. Fordyce was the first Fergus librarian and the books were kept in a room in his home. Fordyce later became the first Warden of Wellington County. In 1857 the free library became a 'Farmers and Mechanics' Institute. In 1862, the library was set up in a room in the Temperence Hall on St. Andrew Street West. In 1904, plans were initiated with Andrew Carnegie to erect a Carnegie Library in Fergus. The present Carnegie library was built in 1910. *Designated Heritage Site
